Campervan & Motorhome Electrical Diagnostics

Something isn't right with your campervan or motorhome's electrical system — but you're not sure what. Your battery keeps going flat. The solar doesn't seem to be doing anything. The inverter cuts out. Everything worked fine last season and now it doesn't.

At Keltie Campers Ltd we offer specialist electrical diagnostics for campervans, motorhomes, caravans and horseboxes. Using professional diagnostic tools, live system data and real-world electrical knowledge, we identify exactly what's wrong — and tell you clearly what needs to happen next.

What Is an Electrical Diagnostic?

A diagnostic appointment is a dedicated assessment of your leisure electrical system. It is not a repair visit. The purpose is to fully investigate the system, identify any faults, misconfigurations or failing components, and provide you with a clear written report of findings and recommendations.

If repairs or upgrades are required following the diagnostic, we quote for that work separately. Many customers find that a diagnostic saves significant time and money by identifying the actual cause of a fault rather than replacing components speculatively.

Signs Your System Needs a Diagnostic

  • Battery going flat overnight or faster than expected
  • Solar panels not appearing to charge the battery
  • Inverter cutting out under load or refusing to start
  • Leisure battery not holding charge as it used to
  • Charger not reaching full charge on hookup
  • DC-DC charger not activating when driving
  • Unexplained electrical drain — something is pulling power and you don't know what
  • Victron system showing warnings or error codes
  • You've bought a secondhand vehicle and don't know what system it has or whether it's working correctly
  • A DIY or previous installation that isn't behaving as expected
  • You're planning a long trip — NC500, Highlands, remote wild camping — and want to be certain the system is reliable before you go

What Our Diagnostic Covers

We carry out a full system assessment covering every component in your leisure electrical setup:

  • Battery health check — state of health, capacity test, charge and discharge behaviour
  • Solar system check — panel output, MPPT controller settings, charge profiles, wiring condition
  • Charging system check — mains charger, DC-DC charger from alternator, charge algorithms
  • Inverter check — load capacity, fault codes, wiring and fusing
  • Wiring inspection — fuse ratings, cable sizing, connection quality, corrosion
  • Victron system review — where fitted, we read VRM portal data, check settings and configuration, and identify errors or misconfigurations
  • Load analysis — identify what is drawing power and whether the system is sized correctly for your usage

At the end of your appointment you'll receive a plain-English summary of exactly what we found, what is working correctly, what isn't, and clear recommendations for any replacements or upgrades required.

Victron System Diagnostics

As Scotland's Victron Approved Installer for leisure vehicles, we have full access to Victron diagnostic tools, VRM portal data and configuration software. For vehicles fitted with Victron equipment, this allows a significantly deeper level of diagnosis than a visual inspection alone can provide.

Where a Victron component is found to be faulty, we do not carry out component-level repairs — only Victron themselves repair their equipment. We diagnose the fault, confirm which unit requires replacement, and quote for a new factory-warranted replacement unit.

Pre-Tour Electrical Health Check

Planning the NC500? Heading to the Outer Hebrides? Going off-grid in the Highlands?

A pre-tour electrical health check is one of the most practical things you can do before a long trip. We verify your system is performing correctly, check battery health, confirm your solar and charging setup is working as it should, and make sure you're not heading into remote territory with a fault waiting to happen.

Book a pre-tour check at least two weeks before your trip to allow time for any remedial work if needed.

What Happens After a Diagnostic?

Some vehicles come in with a single straightforward fault. Others arrive with systems that have been modified over the years and have multiple issues. Either way, after the diagnostic you'll have a clear picture of the system's condition and a prioritised list of what needs attention.

Where repairs or upgrades make sense we'll quote clearly for the work — component replacements, lithium battery upgrades, Victron system installations, solar upgrades, rewiring. There's no obligation, but many customers who come in for a diagnostic leave with a plan for a system that actually works the way they need it to.

Frequently Asked Questions — Electrical Diagnostics

What is the difference between a diagnostic and a repair?
A diagnostic is a dedicated investigation and assessment of your electrical system. We use professional tools and system data to identify faults and provide a written report. Repair work — replacing components, rewiring, resolving faults — is quoted and carried out as a separate job following the diagnostic.

How long does an electrical diagnostic take?
Most diagnostic appointments take between one and two hours depending on system complexity. We'll give you a time estimate when you book.

What should I bring?
Just bring the vehicle. If you have paperwork from previous work on the system — wiring diagrams, installation records, error codes you've noted — bring those too. If you have a Victron VRM account we can pull live system data directly, which speeds up the process significantly.

What if I don't know what system I have?
That's completely fine and very common with secondhand purchases. We'll identify every component, map the system and explain exactly what you have and how it's configured.

Can you diagnose non-Victron systems?
Yes. While we specialise in Victron Energy systems, we can diagnose and assess any leisure electrical system regardless of the components fitted.

Can you repair Victron equipment?
No — only Victron themselves carry out component-level repairs on their equipment. Where we identify a faulty Victron unit we will diagnose the fault, confirm what needs replacing, and quote for a new factory-warranted replacement. This ensures you receive a fully supported, warranted unit rather than a repaired component.

Do you offer a call-out or mobile service?
No. All diagnostic work is carried out at our workshop in Callander, Perthshire. Please bring your vehicle to us.

Where are you based?
We're based in Callander, Perthshire — 45 minutes from Edinburgh and Glasgow, and within easy reach of Perth, Stirling and the Highlands.

How much does a diagnostic cost?
See our Prices page for current diagnostic rates. Diagnostic costs are typically offset against any subsequent repair or upgrade work carried out.
